Generative art, live installation, interactive art, branding

2021

Performa is an interactive digital art installation that took place in Pinerolo, Italy, from the 10th to the 12th of September. It is a space where people could create and modify digital shapes with their hand, from here the name Performa, an invitation to perform in italian.

Context

This project was born in collaboration with Laura Vola, where she mainly focused on financial and organisational aspects, while I curated mainly the creative and interactive aspect of it. Our goal was to transform digital art originally only uploaded on Instagram (@21deiv) into interactive art that can be enjoyed by a wide audience in an engaging and accessible way.

The design of the visual artefacts starts in TouchDesigner, a software for programming live visuals and generative artworks. In order to enable the interplay with the users, a Leap Motion hand-tracking device is connected to the software allowing for real-time interaction. The audience becomes an integral part of the digital representation, creating a new, original and unique version of the image each time. A physical interaction, extremely personal, with a virtual work that, projected on the wall, becomes visible to a larger audience. With a simple gesture of the hand people could frame the performance and make a screenshot of it.

Branding and merchandising

Based on the creation of 25 different forme (shapes), I generated at first three different visuals in Touchdesigner, each of them exploring the relationship between shape and color originally. I played with shapes and type to design a branding that is colorful, joyful but also pointy and fresh.
